Program Overview

The Master of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering (MEng in ISE) is a multidisciplinary graduate program designed to provide students with advanced skills in data science, systems engineering and analytics, and intelligent systems.

This online industrial and systems engineering degree is an ideal way for students with a bachelor’s in engineering to keep their skills current with industry trends and to gain in-demand skills that can lead to career advancement in high-growth industries. In addition, students gain the benefits of going to a lauded school. Rutgers is ranked No. 15 Public University and No. 72 Best Engineering Graduate School by U.S. News & World Report.

Through courses like data analytics, decision making under uncertainty, and planning and operations engineering, students gain critical, in-demand skills necessary to work with increasingly complex systems. Students learn from a faculty of industry experts who exemplify teaching excellence not only through their engaging lectures, but through their curricula, which they develop and refine to align with current engineering advances and standards.

Our faculty are active researchers in many areas, including:

  • Applications in advanced manufacturing, transportation, energy, and security
  • Automation sciences and AI
  • Data science
  • Intelligent systems
  • Process monitoring and quality engineering
  • Reliability engineering
  • System modeling and optimization

“We have a strong alumni network in many different industries, and there are opportunities to connect students to those people and help you with your job search. We also have career fairs, an industry day specifically for ISE, alumni nights, and student chapters of societies.”

Weihong ‘Grace’ Guo, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Program Outcomes

The online master’s in industrial and systems engineering program provides a balance of theory and application, featuring video lectures, exercises, discussions, and hands-on projects. Students also have the opportunity to complete an internship for course credit.

Students will complete three core courses and a seminar to ensure mastery of core competencies in the discipline. The core curriculum also provides students with exposure to industry professionals and current research topics in industrial and systems engineering.

The 30-credit online master’s in industrial and systems engineering focuses on building skills in data science, optimization and AI, probability and statistics, logistical systems and supply chains, engineering project management, and sustainable systems.

Upon completion of the online engineering program, students are prepared to:

  • Apply data science and analysis methods to engineering and business challenges
  • Develop and apply advanced tools and techniques for decision making in complex, dynamic, and uncertain environments
  • Manage engineering and business projects and lead innovation
  • Lead technical projects in high-growth sectors such as tech, finance, logistics, and more

“Our discipline is less focused on a specific industry or specific set of design problems–that’s a very good thing. Every single company or organization needs employees with data analysis and optimization skills, whether it’s working on Wall Street, for a credit card company, or for telecommunications. This whole idea of optimizing a system or improving efficiency–who doesn’t want to do that?”

David W. Coit, Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering

Career Outcomes

Earning a Master of Engineering in Industrial and Systems Engineering can increase your earning potential. Unlike a bachelor’s in engineering, a master’s degree offers the enhanced skills that prepare you for senior-level and leadership roles. According to Lightcast, engineers with a master’s degree earn a median salary of $103K per year.

Organizations are increasingly interested in making improvements to their production: minimizing costs, reducing waste, addressing disruptions and uncertainties, and enhancing reliability and resilience. Industrial and systems engineers are well-positioned to support organizations in these goals.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the industrial engineer occupation is expected to grow 12% through 2033, which is faster-than-average job growth. The BLS also reports a $101,140 annual median salary for this role.

Graduates from the Rutgers Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering are working in:

  • Consulting: Deloitte, Accenture
  • Finance: AIG, Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan
  • Healthcare: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson
  • Logistics: Amazon, FedEx, UPS
  • Government and Military: U.S. Army
  • Technology: Apple, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn
  • Entertainment and Tourism: Disney World

Industrial engineering professionals also have flexibility in the type of work they do, whether they’re more interested in hands-on development or solving advanced mathematical problems.

Job titles of industrial and systems engineering graduates include:

  • Business technology analyst
  • Systems engineer
  • Consultant (technical and management)
  • Data scientist
  • Financial analyst
  • Manufacturing engineer
  • Operations analyst
  • Quality manager
